convenient date and time to take the computer-based exam.
How long should I study for the FE exam?
We suggest you start preparing for your FE exam at least three months in advance of your exam date, or that you study around 300 total hours.
How much does the FE exam cost?
The registration fee for the FE exam is currently $225, payable directly to the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). While this is the standard cost for the exam itself, be aware that some states may have additional application or registration fees, and you may also incur costs for study materials, an approved calculator, or travel to a test center.
Is the FE exam open-book?
No, the FE exam is not open-book. It is a closed-book exam. However, you will have access to a digital NCEES Reference Handbook.
What calculator can I use on the FE exam?
Only specific models approved by NCEES are allowed on the FE exam. See NCEES' website for a list of all approved calculators.
What is the FE exam?
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first of two exams required to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States. Administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), it's a computer-based test designed for recent engineering graduates or students in their final year of an ABET-accredited program. Passing the exam shows that you've mastered the foundational knowledge from your undergraduate engineering degree.
After you pass the FE exam, you earn the title of Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI). This is a crucial step on the path to getting your PE license, which is often required for engineers who work directly with the public or hold specific positions. The FE exam covers a wide range of topics, including math, ethics, and discipline-specific engineering subjects like civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
What is the format of the FE exam?
The FE exam covers 110 questions and primarily uses traditional multiple-choice questions with four options, but it also includes alternative item types (AITs). These AITs are designed to measure your technical knowledge in different ways and include: multiple correct questions (check all that apply), point-and-click questions where you select a specific location on an image, drag-and-place questions where you sort or label items, and fill-in-the-blank questions where you provide a numerical answer.
What topics are on the FE exam?
The FE exam covers a wide range of engineering fundamentals, with topics that vary depending on the specific discipline you choose. All seven versions of the exam—Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Environmental, Industrial and Systems, Mechanical, and Other Disciplines—include general subjects like Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Ethics and Professional Practice, and Engineering Economics.
When and where can I take the FE exam?
The FE exam is computer-based and offered year-round in various testing windows at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.
Who should take the FE exam?
The FE exam is for recent engineering graduates or students nearing the completion of their undergraduate degree.
Why should I take the FE exam?
Taking the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is a vital step toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), a credential that significantly boosts an engineer's career. Passing the FE exam is a prerequisite for taking the final PE exam, and earning the PE license is essential for engineers who want to work on public projects or legally "stamp and seal" engineering documents. Beyond this, passing the FE exam earns you the title of Engineer in Training (EIT), which shows employers your commitment to professional development and makes you a more attractive job candidate, often leading to better job opportunities and a higher salary. It's best to take the exam while you're still in school, as the material will be
fresh in your mind, making it easier to pass and accelerate your career path.
How do I register for the PE exam?
To register for the PE exam, you must first create an account with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). After logging in, you can register for the exam, select your specific engineering discipline, and choose your state. You'll then be authorized to schedule your exam appointment through the Pearson VUE website. It's important to check your state's licensing board requirements, as some states may require an additional application or approval process.
How long should I study for the PE exam?
We suggest you start preparing for your PE exam at least three months in advance of your exam date, or that you study around 300 total hours.
How much does the PE exam cost?
The NCEES exam fee for the PE exam is typically $425, payable directly to NCEES during the registration process. However, the total cost can vary as some state licensing boards may require a separate application and an additional fee to be approved to take the exam.
Is the PE exam open-book?
No, the PE exam is not an open-book exam. It is a computer-based test where you cannot bring your own physical reference materials. Instead, NCEES provides an electronic, searchable PDF of the NCEES PE Reference Handbook and other relevant design standards for you to use during the exam.
What calculator can I use on the PE exam?
Only specific models approved by NCEES are allowed on the PE exam. See NCEES' website for a list of all approved calculators.
What is the format of the PE exam?
The PE exam is 80 questions and primarily uses traditional multiple-choice questions with four options, but it also includes alternative item types (AITs). These AITs are designed to measure your technical knowledge in different ways and include: multiple correct questions (check all that apply), point-and-click questions where you select a specific location on an image, drag-and-place questions where you sort or label items, and fill-in-the-blank questions where you provide a numerical answer.
What is the PE exam?
The PE (Principles and Practice of Engineering) exam is an
8-hour, computer-based test that assesses a minimum level of competency in a
specific engineering discipline. It is the final step in the process of
becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States, following
the completion of an engineering degree and passing the FE (Fundamentals of
Engineering) exam.
What topics are on the PE exam?
The PE exam is not a universal exam; it's a series of discipline-specific exams. The general topics on the exam depend entirely on which of the many engineering disciplines you choose to be tested on, like PE Civil Construction or PE Environmental.
When and where can I take the PE exam?
The PE exam is computer-based and offered year-round in various testing windows at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.
Who should take the PE exam?
Engineers who have a minimum of four years of post-college
work experience in their field and have already passed the FE exam should take
the PE exam. The PE exam is designed for those who want to advance their
careers, take on more responsibility, and gain the legal authority to sign and
seal engineering documents, which is a requirement for many projects.
Why should I take the PE exam?
Taking the PE exam is a significant step toward career advancement, increased earning potential, and job security. A PE license demonstrates a commitment to professional standards and competence, giving you the credibility and authority to take on leadership roles, work as a consultant, or even start your own firm. It also gives you a competitive advantage in the job market and opens up new opportunities.
How do I apply for the PMP exam?
The application process involves three steps: (1) Confirm you are eligible, (2) Gather your information (projects you’ve led and training you’ve completed), and (3) Use your information to fill out the application at pmi.org. Once you have completed these steps, your application will be reviewed, and then you will have to pay an exam fee if you are qualified to move forward. Once approved, you can schedule your exam time at a testing site near you or take the exam online.
How many questions are on the PMP exam?
The PMP exam is comprised of 180 questions.
How much does it cost to take the PMP exam?
The exam fee for PMI members is $405. Non-members pay $555.
How should my study efforts change for the new PE Civil exam?
Your study efforts should not change significantly, you’ll just be focusing on depth topics instead of the more general breadth topics. You can feel confident signing up with an exam prep provider like School of PE who has tailored their PE Civil exam prep courses to the new format.
What changed with the new PE Civil exam format?
The new format of the exam eliminated the “breadth” section, meaning you will be tested more on your specific discipline as opposed to general engineering knowledge.
What is an overview of all the PE Civil exam changes?
School of PE hosted a webinar to provide an overview of all the PE Civil exam changes. Please check out the video here!
What is not changing from the old PE Civil exam?
These exams will still be administered in a CBT format. Most exam syllabi are remaining the same, albeit the topics may be in different orders.
Why did the PE Civil exam change?
NCEES changed the exam to reflect on engineers’ professional expertise. You will be asked questions centered around what you know within your specific discipline instead of asking you questions about general civil engineering that may not apply within your profession.
