You can also read more information about this policy here.
What is the difference between Live Online and OnDemand courses?
The Live Online course format is a live, instructor-led webinar that you attend in real time whereas the OnDemand course format is a pre-recorded class that lets you go at your own pace. You still have the ability to ask the instructors questions as an OnDemand student.
What is the “Register Now, Pay Later” offer?
“Register Now, Pay Later” means you can register early for our Live Online review course to take advantage of the early registration discounts, but your form of payment will not be charged until about three weeks before the start of the class.
What makes the Personalized Study Plan unique?
The study plan is generated by asking a series of questions including what your knowledge level is for each subject, your availability, and the amount of time you would like to spend on refreshing completed subjects.
When are Live Online classes offered?
Live Online classes are offered in various times throughout the year. Please check your desired discipline's course page for upcoming course times.
Where can I download my notes and watch my class recordings?
Our Study Hub allows you to track your courses, download your notes, and stop/start course recordings at any time.
Who should use the Personalized Study Plan?
The Personalized Study Plan is exclusively available for OnDemand students.
Since OnDemand students study at their own pace without the structure of pre-scheduled classes, this plan is designed to help them stay on track and manage their study time effectively.
Will I receive progress notifications?
Yes, emails will be sent letting you know your current progress.
With my Personalized Study Plan, what if there are days or times that I am not able to study?
When creating your Personalized Study Plan, you will be asked to enter the days and times that you are available.
What is the FE exam?
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first of two exams required to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States. Administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), it's a computer-based test designed for recent engineering graduates or students in their final year of an ABET-accredited program. Passing the exam shows that you've mastered the foundational knowledge from your undergraduate engineering degree.
After you pass the FE exam, you earn the title of Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI). This is a crucial step on the path to getting your PE license, which is often required for engineers who work directly with the public or hold specific positions. The FE exam covers a wide range of topics, including math, ethics, and discipline-specific engineering subjects like civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
What is the format of the FE exam?
The FE exam covers 110 questions and primarily uses traditional multiple-choice questions with four options, but it also includes alternative item types (AITs). These AITs are designed to measure your technical knowledge in different ways and include: multiple correct questions (check all that apply), point-and-click questions where you select a specific location on an image, drag-and-place questions where you sort or label items, and fill-in-the-blank questions where you provide a numerical answer.
What topics are on the FE exam?
The FE exam covers a wide range of engineering fundamentals, with topics that vary depending on the specific discipline you choose. All seven versions of the exam—Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, Environmental, Industrial and Systems, Mechanical, and Other Disciplines—include general subjects like Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Ethics and Professional Practice, and Engineering Economics.
When and where can I take the FE exam?
The FE exam is computer-based and offered year-round in various testing windows at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.
Who should take the FE exam?
The FE exam is for recent engineering graduates or students nearing the completion of their undergraduate degree.
Why should I take the FE exam?
Taking the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is a vital step toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), a credential that significantly boosts an engineer's career. Passing the FE exam is a prerequisite for taking the final PE exam, and earning the PE license is essential for engineers who want to work on public projects or legally "stamp and seal" engineering documents. Beyond this, passing the FE exam earns you the title of Engineer in Training (EIT), which shows employers your commitment to professional development and makes you a more attractive job candidate, often leading to better job opportunities and a higher salary. It's best to take the exam while you're still in school, as the material will be
fresh in your mind, making it easier to pass and accelerate your career path.
What is the format of the PE exam?
The PE exam is 80 questions and primarily uses traditional multiple-choice questions with four options, but it also includes alternative item types (AITs). These AITs are designed to measure your technical knowledge in different ways and include: multiple correct questions (check all that apply), point-and-click questions where you select a specific location on an image, drag-and-place questions where you sort or label items, and fill-in-the-blank questions where you provide a numerical answer.
What is the PE exam?
The PE (Principles and Practice of Engineering) exam is an
8-hour, computer-based test that assesses a minimum level of competency in a
specific engineering discipline. It is the final step in the process of
becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States, following
the completion of an engineering degree and passing the FE (Fundamentals of
Engineering) exam.
What topics are on the PE exam?
The PE exam is not a universal exam; it's a series of discipline-specific exams. The general topics on the exam depend entirely on which of the many engineering disciplines you choose to be tested on, like PE Civil Construction or PE Environmental.
When and where can I take the PE exam?
The PE exam is computer-based and offered year-round in various testing windows at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.
Who should take the PE exam?
Engineers who have a minimum of four years of post-college
work experience in their field and have already passed the FE exam should take
the PE exam. The PE exam is designed for those who want to advance their
careers, take on more responsibility, and gain the legal authority to sign and
seal engineering documents, which is a requirement for many projects.
Why should I take the PE exam?
Taking the PE exam is a significant step toward career advancement, increased earning potential, and job security. A PE license demonstrates a commitment to professional standards and competence, giving you the credibility and authority to take on leadership roles, work as a consultant, or even start your own firm. It also gives you a competitive advantage in the job market and opens up new opportunities.

What is not changing from the old PE Civil exam?
These exams will still be administered in a CBT format. Most exam syllabi are remaining the same, albeit the topics may be in different orders.
Why did the PE Civil exam change?
NCEES changed the exam to reflect on engineers’ professional expertise. You will be asked questions centered around what you know within your specific discipline instead of asking you questions about general civil engineering that may not apply within your profession.
What's changing on the PE Mechanical exams?
Starting October 1, 2025, the PE Mechanical exam will follow updated specifications:
Increased discipline-specific content and reduced general content, allowing a deeper focus on your specific area of expertise.
Updated terminology to reflect current industry standards.
Revised NCEES Reference Handbook and practice exams to align with the new exam specifications.
