Is the FE exam open-book?
No, the FE exam is not open-book. It is a closed-book exam. However, you will have access to a digital NCEES Reference Handbook.
What calculator can I use on the FE exam?
Only specific models approved by NCEES are allowed on the FE exam. See NCEES' website for a list of all approved calculators.
What is the FE exam?
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first of two exams required to become a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States. Administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), it's a computer-based test designed for recent engineering graduates or students in their final year of an ABET-accredited program. Passing the exam shows that you've mastered the foundational knowledge from your undergraduate engineering degree.
After you pass the FE exam, you earn the title of Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI). This is a crucial step on the path to getting your PE license, which is often required for engineers who work directly with the public or hold specific positions. The FE exam covers a wide range of topics, including math, ethics, and discipline-specific engineering subjects like civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
What is the format of the FE exam?
The FE exam covers 110 questions and primarily uses traditional multiple-choice questions with four options, but it also includes alternative item types (AITs). These AITs are designed to measure your technical knowledge in different ways and include: multiple correct questions (check all that apply), point-and-click questions where you select a specific location on an image, drag-and-place questions where you sort or label items, and fill-in-the-blank questions where you provide a numerical answer.
Is the PE exam open-book?
No, the PE exam is not an open-book exam. It is a computer-based test where you cannot bring your own physical reference materials. Instead, NCEES provides an electronic, searchable PDF of the NCEES PE Reference Handbook and other relevant design standards for you to use during the exam.
What calculator can I use on the PE exam?
Only specific models approved by NCEES are allowed on the PE exam. See NCEES' website for a list of all approved calculators.

What is the PE exam?
The PE (Principles and Practice of Engineering) exam is an
8-hour, computer-based test that assesses a minimum level of competency in a
specific engineering discipline. It is the final step in the process of
becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States, following
the completion of an engineering degree and passing the FE (Fundamentals of
Engineering) exam.

What changed with the new PE Civil exam format?
The new format of the exam eliminated the “breadth” section, meaning you will be tested more on your specific discipline as opposed to general engineering knowledge.
What is an overview of all the PE Civil exam changes?
School of PE hosted a webinar to provide an overview of all the PE Civil exam changes. Please check out the video here!
What is not changing from the old PE Civil exam?
