Preparing for the October 2026 PE Architectural Engineering Exam Updates

  • Structural Systems (15–23 questions): Evaluates design criteria, material properties, gravity and lateral (wind/seismic) loads, structural component analysis, foundations, and material-specific design for wood, masonry, steel, and concrete structures.
  • Project Administration (7–11 questions): Tests knowledge on scheduling, critical path method, cost estimation, contract documentation, conformance, and legal impacts such as scope of services and errors/omissions.

Searchable Reference Handbooks and Electronic Codes

During the exam, physical books and personal notes are strictly prohibited. Instead, examinees are provided with an electronic version of the PE Architectural Engineering Reference Handbook alongside searchable PDF versions of applicable design standards, accessible through the exam interface one chapter at a time. Key codes listed in the official specifications include the 2018 International Building Code (IBC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), International Fire Code (IFC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), and International Plumbing Code (IPC), as well as standards from ASHRAE (62.1-2016, 90.1-2016), NFPA (13, 14, 20, 70, 72, 101), ACI 318-19, AISC 15th Edition, and ASCE 7-16.
