PE Fire Protection Update - April 1, 2027

What is Changing?

The PE Fire Protection exam is updating both its official exam specifications and referenced design standards effective April 1, 2027. Here is what you need to know:

Updated Exam Specifications & Topic Blueprint

NCEES is realigning the exam domain weightings and content topics to reflect modern fire protection engineering practices. Key updates include enhanced emphasis on water-based fire protection systems, updated risk analysis methodologies, and the addition of modern technologies such as Energy Storage Systems (ESS).

Updated Codes, Standards & References

NCEES is modernizing the electronic reference environment supplied during the exam. Major NFPA standards are moving to current editions, new references have been added (including NFPA 855 for energy storage systems), and legacy references have been updated or retired to reflect current safety codes.

Expanded Question Formats

The exam continues to utilize Alternative Item Types (AITs)—such as point-and-click, drag-and-drop, and fill-in-the-blank items—alongside traditional single-response multiple-choice questions.

This means if you take your exam prior to April 1, 2027, you will take your exam using the current specifications and referenced codes. If you test on or after April 1, 2027, your exam will reflect the revised specifications and 2027 design standards.

What Has Stayed the Same?

Exam Format & Duration: The exam remains an 85-question, 9.5-hour computer-based appointment (including 8 hours of actual exam time, a scheduled 50-minute break, tutorial, and NDA).

Delivery Model: Administered via computer-based testing (CBT) at Pearson VUE test centers with electronic searchable PDF references provided on-screen.
