Everything you should know about the PE Petroleum Exam
The PE Petroleum exam tests for minimum competency within
petroleum engineering. This exam is one of the last steps to take before
earning your professional engineering license.

Prerequisites
Before you are allowed to take the PE Petroleum exam, you will need to meet several requirements specified by NCEES. Because states’ requirements all vary, we suggest checking with your state board.

Exam Fees
A fee of $400 will be due to NCEES before you can sit for the PE Petroleum exam. Because every state may have different registration procedures, we suggest you check with your state’s licensing board in case there are separate applications or fees required to register. Additionally, please be aware that if you need to
reschedule your exam or make changes to your registration, you may be
responsible for a separate fee to Pearson VUE.

Exam Day
The PE Petroleum exam is computer-based, administered once per year, and made up of both multiple-choice questions and alternative item types (AITs). This exam includes 85 questions, and the exam appointment time is 9.5 hours. Only 8.5 hours of that time period will be for the exam, however. You will have the ability to use an electronic reference handbook and all specified design standards during the exam. For the PE Petroleum exam, you will have access to the SPE Petroleum Engineering Certification and PE License Exam Reference Guide. This guide is available for download and purchase on SPE’s website.

After the Exam
CBT exam results are typically available 7 to 10 days after you take the PE
Petroleum exam. NCEES will send you an email with instructions on how to view
and understand your exam review results through your NCEES account. If you are
curious to learn more about this process, please click here.
